Settled in 1639 by Quakers Flushing, first named Vlissengen, was one of theoriginal four owns of Queens and encompassed the entire northeastern portion of the county.

Of the many historical sites located in Flushing three of worthy note are: Bowne House, built in 1661, it is the oldest, and still standing, structure in Queens; Friends Meeting House is the oldest and still active house of worship in the Country with services dating back to 1694 and the Weeping Beach Tree planted, in 1847.
